Two Roads to Eternity: Finding the Path That Truly Leads to Life

Evangelist Jeff Thomas Season 31 Episode 6

Which road are you walking? The question pierces straight to the heart as we explore Jesus' profound teaching from Matthew 7:13-14 about the two paths that stretch before every human soul.

Most people—even many who consider themselves religious—are traveling the broad, comfortable road. It's well-lit, smooth, and packed with fellow travelers who profess belief in God or even Jesus. But as Christ himself warns with stark clarity, this popular highway leads not to heaven but to destruction. The road is lined with self-deception, with those who've embraced the dangerous illusion of salvation without surrender.

The narrow way, by contrast, is difficult to find and challenging to walk. Jesus doesn't use gentle language to describe this path—He tells us to "strive," to "agonize," to "wrestle" our way through this gate. This isn't about earning salvation but about the reality that genuine faith always manifests in transformed living. The narrow way demands daily cross-bearing, dying to self, and bringing every thought into captivity under Christ's lordship. It's marked not by perfection but by persistent obedience.

The most alarming aspect of Christ's teaching is the repeated emphasis on numbers: "many" travel the broad path to destruction, while only a "few" find the way to life. This should shock us into serious self-examination. Are we truly converted or merely making a religious confession? Has our belief led to regeneration—a complete transformation of who we are? We cannot simultaneously walk two opposing paths or serve two masters. The choice before us is binary, with eternal consequences hanging in the balance. The gate remains open today, but it will not stay open forever. Which road will you choose?

John 14:6 "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
If you haven't received Jesus Christ by Faith, as your personal Lord and Savior; I strongly encourage you to do so before it is eternally too late!!!

Speaker 1:

Hello and welcome to just another edition of Words from the Word of God. Today I want you to turn with me, if you will, to Matthew, chapter 7. Matthew, chapter 7, verse 13 and 14. Let's read together there the Lord, this is toward the end of his Sermon on the Mount, there in chapter 7, which spans from chapter 5 through chapter 7 of the gospel of matthew, and we come to the end of that, near to the end of that sermon, and these are the words of christ himself. He says enter ye in at the straight gate, for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction. And notice this and many, many put emphasis on that word, many there be which go in thereat Verse 14, because straight is the gate and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life. And notice this and put stress upon it, and few, few there be that find it. Today I want you to, if you will, picture something with me, and this is what Jesus lays before us, a scene that is so real. And it is so real because it reflects in many ways our own spiritual condition at this moment.

Speaker 1:

There are two roads here mentioned in the scripture stretching into eternity. In the scripture stretching into eternity. Well, that is exactly what the Savior is talking about eternity, the road that leads to two destinations in eternity heaven or hell. One road is packed with people sinners, believers, churchgoers, religious folks. It's smooth, it's well lit, lined with familiar. Over this road hangs a sign that reads I believe in God, and some go as far as saying I believe Jesus. I believe in Jesus and I believe in God. But don't miss this. It's a broad way, the road of assumption, the path of self-assured faith without submission. May I repeat that the path of self-assured faith without submission. But it leads not to heaven, as Christ said, it leads to destruction. And another disturbing thing is many the words, many there be which go in thereat. Now, if you will turn with me to the second row mentioned here, it's very narrow. As Jesus said, enter ye in at the straight gate, for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction. And many go in thereat because straight is the gate and narrow is the way that leads to life. And few there be that find that this road, the second road, is narrow, but, as many of us that are truly born again know, it's a rugged road. It's almost invisible in comparison to the broad way, and few walk this road, but those who do carry their cross each day and obey their Lord and walk and surrender their Lord and walk in surrender.

Speaker 1:

Over this road hangs a sign that reads I believe in Jesus Christ and I obey God. Let me say it clearly it's not enough to believe in God, it's not enough to believe in Jesus, so to speak, if your belief and let me state this clearly and closely, and I say again very clearly and openly, but slowly it's not enough to believe in God, if your belief never leads to true obedience, if your belief never leads to true obedience, if your belief never leads to conversion, if your belief never leads to regeneration, being born from above. Because eternity doesn't hinge on your confession, it hinges on your true conversion. Jesus says right here in Matthew 7, 13,. Enter ye in at the straight gate, for wide is the gate, broad is the way that lead us to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat Today. We're not asking if you believe in God, we're asking have you obeyed him? Have you entered the narrow gate? Verse 14,. Jesus continues because straight is the gate and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life, and few, few there be that find it. I can't stress it enough. Many there be that are walking the broad way, the easy way, the easy way, but few, very few, as Christ says. Now, this is not what I'm telling you. This is what Jesus Christ, our Savior, our Lord, our Redeemer, is telling us, each one of us, today.

Speaker 1:

Where is your spiritual walk? What road are you traveling? The broad way or the narrow way? These aren't my words, they're his Few. Find the narrow way, according to our Lord, because few are willing to surrender to self and to live in Christ. The broad way welcomes your sin. The narrow way demands your repentance. Are you willing to profess Christ and turn loose of sin?

Speaker 1:

You know, many say well, I believe in Jesus and and I can live like I want to. That's not scriptural, that is not according to the truth of god's word. You cannot travel two ways, going in different directions at the same time. It is not physically possible. And might I say it's not physically possible? And might I say it's not physically possible, just as you can't drive down both north and southbound lanes of I-85, you can't ride in both lanes at the same time in your vehicle, because it's physically impossible to walk the spiritual way, the narrow way that leads to heaven, that demands transformation, that demands dying to self, that demands that we live in Christ and Christ lives in us and we abide in him and he in us. We can't walk that way and, in sin, going the broad way at the same time is spiritually impossible. There is no gray area. It is either black or white. It is either hell or heaven, destruction or eternal life. You can't have your cake and eat it too, I'm sorry to say.

Speaker 1:

Jesus would tell us when asked if you will turn with me right quick to Luke, luke, chapter. I believe it's chapter 13. Luke, chapter 13,. Turn with me there. We want to read verse 23 and 24. Similar words of our savior.

Speaker 1:

But he was asked this question. Then said one unto him lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them strive to enter in at the net, at straight gate. That is the narrow gate. And in transliteration, strive to enter in is the narrow gate. In transliteration Strive to enter in at the narrow gate.

Speaker 1:

For many. I say unto you will seek to enter in and shall not be able to. Why will you not be able to enter in? Why? Why will you not be able to enter in the word strive means to agonize, to wrestle, to struggle. But many want to claim christ and live like they want to and live like the world, talk like the world, go out and party like the world and then come to church on sunday and pretend that they're holier than thou and they've. They've checked their religious cloak in and put it on as they walk in the door of the church, but they put it, check it out, at the back door and walk out and live like they want to. For the rest, for monday through saturday and then sunday, it's a different look. You know truly living what they're professing you. You know grace is free, but following Jesus will cost you everything. That's why he says strive. That word in transliteration, if I can repeat it, says to agonize, to wrestle and to struggle.

Speaker 1:

I am one who deals with debilitating migraine headaches every second of every day. I can tell you by my own personal experience walking for Christ is not an easy thing to do. Living for him is not the well-lit, smooth way to heaven. He said if a man shall follow me, he shall take up his cross daily and follow me. Not when we feel like it, not when we think we want to or not, that we want to pick it up and lay it down, take up his cross daily, daily striving, striving, you know.

Speaker 1:

Many want to say well, they're illness. And I'm not. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that my illness, my pain is my daily cross. No, my daily cross is dying to my flesh, dying to self, dying to sin, putting it, bringing every thought into captivity, surrendering my heart daily to the Lord. That is striving. It is not fighting with an illness, though that's called a trial or a tribulation. To agonize, to wrestle, to struggle means we're fighting the spiritual battle and the Lord is winning on our side because we're putting everything else apart and away from us. We're no longer a part of that life. It has nothing to do with us.

Speaker 1:

If you claim to be saved and your life has never changed, you might want to check up. You need to check your spirituality. You need a spiritual checkup. You need to understand that you might not be converted. You may just be doing a confession. You may be living a confession, not a conversion. You need to be regenerated. Paul said those that are in Christ are a new creature. Old things have passed away. Have the old things passed away in your life or are they still at the forefront of your life? And you're still doing that and claiming Christ.

Speaker 1:

You can't walk the narrow way and the broad way at the same time. That is what Christ is putting before us there in Matthew, chapter 7, verse 13 and 14. We cannot walk the two roads, going in different directions, at the same time, and we certainly can't sit on the sideline in the median, so to speak. You know the illusion of salvation without surrender. If I can give you that, let me lovingly warn you here of the illusion of salvation without surrender. You can believe God exists and still be lost. You can serve in ministry and never know the true master. You can perform miracles and miss heaven, jesus says.

Speaker 1:

Many in that day will say unto me Lord, lord, didn't we do this? Didn't you eat? Didn't you teach in our streets? Didn't we eat and drink in your presence? Didn't we cast out demons in your name? And he will say depart from me, for I never knew you, he says.

Speaker 1:

Many again will say that because they did not choose him over self, they did not choose to obey the word of God over the word of the devil and sin and the world. We've got to choose one way or the other, and and the way of salvation? The only way is Jesus Christ, repentance, turning from what we used to be, turning from the world, turning from sin and turning to God, by placing all of our trust, all of our faith, in Jesus Christ. If I can repeat this again lovingly, because many, I believe, are walking that broad way, thinking they're in the danger of self-deception, you know, the greatest form of deception is self-deception, right, because we deceive ourselves into believing something that's not true and we're deceiving our own heart. If I can lovingly warn you of this again, you can believe God exists and still be lost. You can serve in ministry and never know the master. You can perform miracles and miss heaven. The broad path is lined with church feuds, but hell is at the end. Proverbs, chapter 14, verse 12, tells us there is a way which seemeth right unto man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

Speaker 1:

There is a word that I really cannot stand, and that is religion. I cannot stand someone to mention and say I am religious. What does that mean? What does that mean? Does that carry weight? Because many think their denomination is their religion. Many think the man-made rules that they follow in a denomination are religion. That's the way they live and they think that that church pew and their membership there is going to get them to heaven, the whole time missing the true thing of repentance, of true repentance, true regeneration, truly being born from above and accepting and trusting in Christ solely as their Savior. Religion without regeneration will not save you. Profession without possession will not carry you through the gates of heaven.

Speaker 1:

The narrow road isn't paved with perfection. May I say that because please do not mistakenly take me as one saying that I'm perfect. There is no way any of us, including me, can walk perfectly in this world. The flesh wars against the spirit, but we must die to self. We must take that into captivity. We must take the thoughts and our mind and our heart and the passions of our heart into captivity under the gospel of Jesus Christ and under obedience to his word, and we must allow the Holy Spirit to direct our lives according to the word of God, because anything other than that will fall short. Strive to enter in, agonize, wrestle and struggle to enter in, because I promise you the end is worth it. The end is worth it. The narrow road isn't paved with perfection. No, it's marked by obedience. Altar call, if I can.

Speaker 1:

I wish I had an altar that I I wish and I believe the lord is doing it in a great way right now, with the things going on around us. I believe he's opening up the biggest altar there's ever been for people to step off the broad road and repent and receive Jesus before it's eternally too late. I believe that's happening right now. I pray that there will be a great spiritual revival in our country. I pray that souls will be saved. It is the passion of my heart, it is what the driving force of my heart to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ that souls would be saved before it's eternally too late. Christ is soon to return, friend, the road beneath your feet has a destination, has a destination. The question is not do you believe, but have you obeyed? The narrow gate is still open, but it will not stay open forever.

Speaker 1:

If you're not sure if you're saved, if you think, well, maybe I've been living a lie. Maybe I've been walking that road, living in my religion, living in my denomination the whole time, self-deceiving myself into the fact that I'm lost and undone. Let the Holy Spirit deal with your heart. Do not think that I'm one to preach and say that I'm perfect. No, I'm not. I'm not by no means. I'm a long way from it. But I strive, I wrestle daily, I agonize daily that I might that the words of my mouth and that meditation of my heart may be pleasing in his sight and that I would strive and wrestle and agonize to be more conformed to the image of Christ each day.

Speaker 1:

If you're not sure or you know for a fact that you're not saved, you've never received Christ as your Lord and Savior, or you're professing it, professing him and not living it, not living into self-destruction, self-death, dying to self. You're not dying to self and you've got self in your life and self in your way. You haven't died to self, you haven't died to pride, you haven't humbled yourself through repentance and you're still walking and your life is full of sin more than it is full of the Lord, full of sin more than it is full of the Word of God. Whatever reason, if you're not sure or you know for a fact that you've never received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, I ask you to pray with me now. As I said, the altar is open, the altar is wide open today.

Speaker 1:

I believe the Lord is trying to reach many people in many different ways through natural disasters, through pestilence, through wars, rumors of wars, through nation rising against nation, all the unrest in the Middle East. I believe he's trying to give us all a message hey, prepare your hearts and be watching. Pray with me today. Say, lord Jesus, I realize I'm a sinner, but I reject the world that I've lived in, I reject the crowd that I've lived in, I reject the crowd that I've been running with, I reject the sin that I've been so caught up with and I ask that you would forgive me of it. Right now. I leave behind comfort, I leave behind self and I choose your cross today. And I choose your cross today. I choose to walk that narrow way. Save me today, lord Jesus, and wash me and lead me through the narrow gate. I surrender all to you, lord. I believe that you died. I believe that you rose again the third day. I believe you are the. I believe that you rose again the third day. I believe you are the risen son of God and I ask you, as I surrender to you today, to be my Lord and be my savior. If you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart if you prayed that step now into obedience, start walking, start striving, start dying to self.

Speaker 1:

It's not going to be easy. It's not the Christian life, the true Christian life, the true born-again believer life is not an easy road to walk, but it's the only narrow way to walk. But it's the only narrow way and Jesus is the only way that we can ever come to the Father eternally. Let heaven write your name down today. My friend.

Speaker 1:

Jesus loves us all, no matter where you're at. He loves us all and he's always willing to forgive. He's always seeking to save that which is lost. Two roads, two gates, two eternities await. The broad way feels right but ends in death. The narrow way hurts now but heals forever. Which road are you on today? Because eternity won't wait for a detour. I ask you to join with me and I thank you for joining us today. I ask you to join me in the next broadcast. According to the will of God, we'll be speaking on built to collapse when sand becomes a soul's foundation. That's according to the will of the Lord. Thank you for joining us today. I look so forward to the next time that we can join in a word from the word of God. God bless you all.
