Broken Hearts, Faithful God: The Unchanging Truth in Changing Seasons

Evangelist Jeff Thomas Season 31 Episode 2

Send us a text

After a season of silence due to health challenges, we return to our journey through Matthew's Gospel where the unchanging truth of God's Word speaks directly to our changing circumstances. This powerful reconnection reminds us that Jesus Christ—Emmanuel, God with us—remains constant through every season of life.

We resume our exploration of Matthew's early chapters, tracing the golden thread of God's redemptive plan from promise to fulfillment. Matthew meticulously documents how Jesus fulfills Old Testament prophecy, quoting Scripture nearly 99 times with the refrain "that it might be fulfilled." From His genealogy that establishes His royal lineage to the miraculous virgin birth, from the Magi's worship to John's powerful ministry, every detail confirms Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah.

The narrative takes us through pivotal moments revealing Jesus' divine nature and purpose—His baptism where the Trinity is gloriously revealed, His wilderness victory over Satan through Scripture, and His revolutionary teaching that turns worldly values upside down. The Sermon on the Mount establishes that Jesus didn't come to abolish the law but to fulfill it, raising the standard of righteousness beyond mere rule-keeping to heart transformation. This higher standard exposes our inability to save ourselves and magnifies the glory of what Christ accomplished—paying "a debt He did not owe, for a price we could not pay."

The beautiful truth remains: Jesus offers transformation from the inside out, changing hearts that then change lives. His salvation isn't about cleaning yourself up first—it's about allowing Him to create something new within you. Whether you've walked with Him for decades or are searching for something beyond what this world offers, His invitation stands: "Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." Don't wait. The King who came is coming again. Is your heart ready to receive Him?

John 14:6 "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
If you haven't received Jesus Christ by Faith, as your personal Lord and Savior; I strongly encourage you to do so before it is eternally too late!!!

Speaker 1:

Hello and grace and peace to you in the mighty name of our Lord and Savior, our Redeemer, jesus Christ. This is your brother in Christ and fellow servant, jeff Thomas, and before I say anything else today, I want to begin with a verse of Scripture from the powerful Word of God Matthew, chapter 1, verse 23,. And we've been in a study Matthew, chapter 1, verse 23,. And we've been in a study. We left off at verse 20, if I'm not mistaken, in the last broadcast, but I want to look at verse 23 of chapter 1. It says Behold, a virgin shall be with child and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which, being interpreted, is God with us and beloved. That is still true today. You know, as I refer back to, you know the sickness and the silence and the hardships and the trials and tribulations, and sometimes the hiatus of a season, that the Lord puts us on the so-called sideline. That we may be still and understand that he is God. And we must understand, as we go through, no matter what happens in our life, no matter the circumstances that surround us, the Lord never changes. He is the same today as he was yesterday and will be forevermore. The eternal Lord, god and our Savior, jesus Christ. And Jesus, who is of Manuel God with us, is the focus as we have entered into the study through the gospels, as the Lord leads.

Speaker 1:

You know, it's been quite some time since our last broadcast, as May 13th of this year was the last broadcast, and that pause, though unavoidable, has, I must say, weighed heavy upon my heart and it's dampened my spirit in certain ways. And in other ways it's been good for me because it's given me time to really give along with the Lord in his word and he's blessed my heart. So I have to give him praise for that. You know, I had some unforeseen health issues that took me away from this microphone, away from this ministry and out of fellowship with many of you, my dear brothers and sisters in Christ, for a season. Praise God by his sufficient and sustaining grace and through your faithful prayers for me and Teresa, we are back together once again with you, to open up the living and powerful Word of God and share words again from the word of God.

Speaker 1:

Today we pick back up our journey through the powerful gospel of Matthew, proclaiming the unchanging, and notice that the unchanging truth of God's word, just as he is unchanging. His word is unchanging, it's unyielding. It does not matter about our opinion. What matters is the truth of God's word. It's the final authority in all things and by telling us, and as Matthew does here, jesus, the King of the Jews, the promised Messiah, the only source of real hope for the hopeless and lasting help for the helpless, whether you've been walking with the Lord for many years or you're tuning in today, lost and undone, longing for something more than this world can offer, something eternal for your soul, this message today is for you. This will be a sort of review as to what we've learned thus far and what we have seen revealed to us thus far concerning our Savior, our Redeemer, the Lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the world, none other than Jesus Christ himself. And so now, beloved, we take up again the sacred thread of the gospel tapestry of Matthew, because, while seasons may shift and circumstances may change, the word of God stands unshaken.

Speaker 1:

Let us return to where we last stood, the opening chapters of Matthew, fully understanding that these are not just the first lines of any book. They are a trumpet blast across the time and human history, declaring with clarity and conviction that God keeps his promises. Let us walk once more from the lineage to the lordship, from promise to power, and behold the unfolding glory of Emmanuel. Jesus Christ, god with us. The word became flesh and dwelt among us and we beheld his glory as the only glory of the only begotten, of the father, full of grace and full of truth. And we look to him today. And that's what this study is meant to be. It's meant to draw us and give us a laser focus on none other than the life, the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Lord From you know when we began, from promise to power.

Speaker 1:

Today, as we begin this survey, we want to look at the events through Matthew, chapter 1, through Matthew chapter 5, verse 20, where we left off, you know, from the first verse, matthew, chapter 1, verse 1, we are reminded that Jesus is not an afterthought in God's redemptive plan for mankind. If you trace it all the way back to Genesis, chapter 3, verse 15, where the seed of the woman would crush Satan's head and Satan, of course, would bruise his heel, and that happened at a place called Calvary. But Jesus is the fulfillment of prophecy, as we learned through Matthew. He is the fulfillment of prophecy as a matter of fact, matthew, I believe, more than any other gospel writer says in many of his writings here, as he records, he says and this happened, that it might be fulfilled, and many of his quotes from the Old Testament, I think, which are some kind of 99 of those quotes from the Old Testament through the gospel of Matthew, who was very knowledgeable. Evidently in the Old Testament scriptures he makes known that Jesus is the fulfillment of prophecy, the heir to the throne of David and the son of Abraham. We learned this in the first chapter. Thus, far as we move on from there, we have seen how even the genealogy of Christ tells the story of grace.

Speaker 1:

In Matthew, chapter 1, verse 18 through 25, the curtain is pulled back on the greatest miracle of all, the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, where it says there in verse 23,. And it was interpreted God with us, emmanuel, god with us. He is not a distant, disinterested deity. He is not a dead deity, as so many others that are worshiped this day and time are, that are in the grave and their tombs rest here upon the earth. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ became flesh and dwelt among us, died on the cross. He came to save sinners like you and me. But he came with purpose and he came in the person of God in the flesh that he might die on Calvary's cross to save sinners like you and me.

Speaker 1:

You know, as we looked at the steps of the Magi, as we followed in their footsteps in their long journey to follow the star that came to rest over the house where the child was, we learned about worship that it's not about convenience but it's costly devotion. We learn that devoting our hearts fully to him in worship that we are to go through any circumstances and trials and tribulations. We are to carry on and understand that even though in serving him things may come into our life, but we still are devoted to Christ-centered worship, christ-centered focus in our hearts upon our Lord and Savior and our great God. You know, in the life of Joseph we were taught about obedience in the midst of uncertainty, as Joseph was faithful to follow the commands of the angel of the Lord that came unto him. About taking Mary as his wife, about fleeing with the mother and child into Egypt as Herod tried to kill out the king. As the Magi said, we have come to see the king of the Jews and Herod, in jealousy, was trying to kill out that line there and the Lord had warned Joseph through an angel to flee into Egypt. And then, after Herod died, the angel came back and said you can go back. And they ended up in Nazareth, which fulfilled more prophecy. But then we went from there as about being taught, even in the greatest circumstance, in the most life-threatening circumstance, that we are to remain obedient unto our Lord. We are not to give up. We're to keep trying, keep striving to be more Christ-like each day. We love him, we adore him and we are in all circumstances obedient to him and his word, no matter what. Then we look at the great prophet. What I like to say. Jesus said he's the prophet of all prophets.

Speaker 1:

John the Baptist, who thundered out the timeless cry that not only rang true in that day but still rings true today, repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. And in the Jordan River we saw heaven open and the Trinity revealed as Jesus was baptized and came up out of the water and the Holy Spirit descended as a dove and rested upon him. And that is how John was able to recognize who he was, that it was Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah. And to that in John 1, verse 29, we see, he cried when he saw Jesus coming unto him. Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world. But coming up out of the Jordan River, the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus. So you have the Son and you have the Holy Spirit. God the Son, god the Holy Spirit. And then the voice thundered from heaven, from God, the Father. He said this is my beloved son, in whom I am already well pleased. Praise God. So we see the full revelation of the Trinity there, at Jesus' baptism, there in the Jordan River.

Speaker 1:

Now, after John is put into prison, we find that Jesus, after the baptism, was carried into the wilderness by the Spirit. And there we see, as we follow our Lord, into the wilderness, where he faced Satan and his temptations, not with and overcame him, not with displays of his divine eternal power, but with the sharp sword of the scripture saying. It is written three different times. He pointed to Satan three different times to scripture and he overcame him not only by quoting scripture but obeying scripture. And today, just as then, the enemy still flees from the word of God, rightly spoken by the faithful and obedient servant of God.

Speaker 1:

Then, in Matthew, chapter four, as we go on, jesus begins his earthly ministry. He began to preach and to teach and say as he went. He did not we find that he did not go to the temple precincts of Jerusalem, where all the religious and the religiosity was being carried out hypocritically, but he went to Galilee, a area despised by. It was a despised place by man, but chosen by God, to where Jesus would go and minister and begin his ministry. And his message followed up John's message as Jesus cried repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. And as he called fishermen that day from their nets to be fishers of men, fishermen to be fishers of men. And he's still calling souls today to follow him. As he told them, follow me and I will make you. When you decide in your heart to receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, he will make you by giving you that regeneration, sending his spirit into your heart to dwell inside of you. He will dwell inside of you, in your heart, by the power and presence of the Holy Spirit and he will make you a son and daughter of the Most High God. You go from a hell-bound sinner to the son and daughter of the Most High God. Praise God.

Speaker 1:

Then, as we entered into Matthew, chapter 5,. Jesus sees the multitudes and he climbs the mountain. He climbs up on a hill and opens his mouth and begins to teach. And the disciples, as the word of God says, come unto him. And that's where Jesus gives us the Beatitudes, as he begins his teaching, which flip the world upside down when he says blessed are the poor in spirit, the mourners, the meek. Why? Because God's kingdom doesn't belong to the proud. It belongs to the broken and contrite spirit who knows they are in great need of a savior, they're in great need of Jesus Christ. Then we go from the power of Jesus Christ, then we go from the power, we go from the promise and power to the fulfillment and the fullness. And here we arrive at Matthew, where we left off.

Speaker 1:

Matthew, chapters 5, verse 17 through 20, where Jesus said think not that I have come to destroy the law or the prophets. I am not come to destroy but to fulfill. This is a divine declaration that changes everything of that day and it still changes hearts today. He did not come to tear down God's law. No, he reaffirmed it in every way. Not only that, he came to meet it perfectly.

Speaker 1:

The scribes and Pharisees were experts in outward religion. Without inward change. Jesus would say they are clean, there's only outside. But then inside they are full of dead men's bones. But Jesus revealed what always been true God is after the heart. God is after a surrendered heart to him. And the first step to being surrendered to him is to accept the Messiah, jesus Christ, emmanuel, god with us as your personal Lord and Savior, being born from above, being born again of the Spirit. Where Jesus says again his Spirit, this Holy Spirit, comes to reside in your heart.

Speaker 1:

And men will tell you that that's not taught in Scripture. Well, that's not so, because the Word of God deals with the heart of men. God deals with the heart. He doesn't deal with anything else. He deals with the heart because that's where the seed of iniquity is. That is where the heart is desperately wicked. As Jeremiah said, who can know it? Jesus said out of the heart comes. All these egregious sin and iniquities are the most twisted sins that we could come up with, but sins and trespasses our hearts are full of. He lifts the bar of righteousness beyond our reach.

Speaker 1:

As Jesus begins speaking and teaching and then reaches down in mercy, he shows us that rule keeping can't save anyone and that no amount of moral effort can justify a single soul. And here is where grace explodes with glory, because Jesus paid a debt he did not owe, for a price that we could not pay. He not only fulfilled every demand of the law by his perfect life, but he offered himself the spotless sacrifice as the Lamb of God on the old, rugged cross. He bore all the sins of the world and his resurrection Now. As he was on the cross, those three dark hours of Calvary, god poured out his wrath, and God's wrath upon our sin was satisfied that day.

Speaker 1:

John would say he is the propitiation for our sin, and not our sins only, but the sins of the whole world. This is an all-inclusive good news. It is an all-inclusive gospel, and whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. But Jesus, through his resurrection, secured our victory over death, sin and Satan and hell in the grave. And now, by faith, not by works. His righteousness is imputed to everyone who receives and believes upon his name. That's not religious theory, my friends, that's rescue, that's salvation. And his name is Jesus, the Christ Emmanuel, god with us.

Speaker 1:

In closing, I say to every born again believer listening stand fast in the grace of God. We are the salt of the earth. We are the light to the world, not because of who we are. Remember that, my friends, my brothers and sisters in Christ. It's not about who we are, it's not about what we do. Everything that we do should bring glory and honor to God. Everything. That's how we should live our life. That every breath, be word and action would bring him glory and exalt the name of Jesus Christ above all other names, as he has been highly lifted up and extolled, given a name above every name, that at his name every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that he is Lord to the glory of God. It is all about who he is. It's not about us, it's not about what we do. It's all about who he is and what he accomplished that day at Calvary and what he has accomplished through his resurrection, living again, that he might give us life and give it to us more abundantly.

Speaker 1:

My friends, don't lose heart, don't hide your life. The righteousness of Christ now shines through us. Not to impress the world, but to transform the world. Not to be transformed like the world, not to conform to the world, but stand out as a beacon of light. Stand out of that sun, be that salt that goes to the womb and heals, be that salt that purifies. Then that's what happens when we allow the Holy Spirit to take hold of us and lead us and guide us as we walk this life here on earth, trying to be conformed and striving to be more and more conformed to the image of God's dear son, jesus Christ.

Speaker 1:

The king is coming, and our labor is not in vain, my friends, my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. First Corinthians, chapter 15, says verse 57, but thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, listen closely, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, for as much as ye know that your labor is not in vain, in what In us? No, in our effort, no, in the Lord. It's not what we're doing for him, it is what he is doing through us. It's not about us, it's about bringing him glory. That Jesus said that the world may see your good works and un-glorify your father, which is in heaven. And that's the first time the Jews had ever heard that your father, your father, he is our father. We're born again into his family. We are his sons and daughters, heirs, joint heirs with Christ, who made it all so.

Speaker 1:

And the invitation goes out to the lost today, to the one who is listening. You're lost and undone without Jesus. Today. You're burdened, you're broken, maybe even bitter. Hearing this and hear this, my friend, every man that hath been near, let him hear. My friend, and I do call you friends. I don't look down my nose at you, because I was where you was one day. I was broken. I was a sinner, far away from the Lord, but I learned of the grace of God, I learned of the love of God in Christ Jesus, my Lord, and I accepted him into my heart that day and I asked Jesus to come in and make me whole, be my Savior, be my Lord, and I dedicated my life to him at that very moment. My friend, it is so beautiful the transformation that he made in my life and he can do the same for you. You don't have to clean yourself up before to get saved. Don't worry about cleaning yourself up.

Speaker 1:

It's not about going from the outside in the change. It's about a change that occurs in your heart and brings about an outward change, once the Holy Spirit comes to reside in your heart. It's called regeneration. All things become new. All the old has passed away. You become a new creature in Christ, a new creation. Your heart is created by Christ, something from nothing, as God works in your heart through the power of the Holy Spirit, through Jesus Christ, the Lord, come in repentance, come in faith, come with all your sin and all your shame and lay it at the feet of the Savior.

Speaker 1:

God's word says Romans 10, 9 through 11. He says excuse me, romans 9, excuse me, romans 10, I'll get it right in a minute. Romans 9,. Excuse me, romans 10, I'll get it right in a minute. Romans 10, verse 9 through verse 13,. The word of God says If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in thy mind no, believe in thy heart, that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Listen closely, listen closely, for there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich. He's rich unto all that call upon him. And the word of God tells us this sinner friend, for whosoever, that anybody's included. There's no difference. It's not about race, it's not about culture, it's not about anything else to do in this earth. It's about Jesus Christ. It's about about anything else to do in this earth, it's about Jesus Christ. It's about what he did on Calvary's cross. It says for whosoever, all are included, all inclusive gospel. You heard me say it earlier Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Speaker 1:

Don't wait, do not postpone eternity. Today is the day of salvation and every soul, every person will live somewhere in eternity. You will either give your life to christ or you will reject him. You'll, you'll give your life to him, give your heart to to him and accept him as Lord and Savior, be born again and live with him eternity in heaven. Or you can reject him and continue living in the world, living in sin, and you will end up in the lake of fire and hell for an eternity, where the flame is not quenched and the worm doth not and it's cast into outer darkness, forever separates, called the second death, being separated forever from god. No grace, no peace, no love. Everything will be gone. All it is is suffering and burning in hell in the lake of fire. Don't wait, my friend, don't wait. If you feel the calling and drawing of the Holy Spirit, listen, listen. Today, come to the foot of the cross and be saved, come to the saving knowledge of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Speaker 1:
